Highlights: • The level of acid sphingomyelinase was increased in diabetic rat kidneys. • ER stress induced apoptosis was increased in diabetic rat kidneys. • Alpha-mangostin alleviated ER stress-induced renal injury. • Alpha-mangostin reduced renal cell apoptosis via inhibiting acid sphingomyelianse. • The work provided a promising method for diabetic nephropathy treatment. Diabetic nephropathy is a common complication of diabetes, but there are currently few treatment options. The aim of this study was to gain insight into the effect of alpha-mangostin on diabetic nephropathy and possible related mechanisms.
