Solid bed adsorption systems for dehydrating and treating hydrocarbon gases and liquids can be optimized by understanding the inherent advantages and disadvantages of commonly used adsorbents. These include activated aluminas, molecular sieves, silica gels and alumina-based selective adsorbents. In many cases, a combination bed of these different types of adsorbents is the optimum technical and economical configuration for a specific separation application. Using combination adsorbent bed systems is becoming more common in the natural gas processing, petroleum refining, petrochemical and industrial gases industries. Solid bed adsorption systems are effective for trace contaminant (H{sub 2}O, sulfur-based compounds) removal from hydrocarbon gas and liquid streams including applications in the natural gas processing industry.
