A hand-held gas chromatograph (Photovac Snapshot GC) has been validated for field determination of low to sub-ppmv concentrations of BTX in air. This instrument carries a Class 1 Division 1, Groups A,B,C,D safety rating and performs a benzene-only analysis in 4 minutes and a benzene, toluene and C8 aromatics (i.e. ethylbenzene, o,m,p-xylenes) analysis in 10 minutes. The detection limit for benzene is 0.1 ppmv and 1.0 ppmv for toluene and C8 aromatics. The Snapshot GC has been successfully utilized by field personnel for several field applications, such as Industrial Hygiene area monitoring, vapor recovery unit carbon bed outlet measurements and remediation system vent measurements.
