Trichloroethylene (TCE), a commonly used volatile organic solvent, poses a major environmental concern because of its potential carcinogenic properties, its ability to migrate quickly through soil and its solubility characteristics in water. To aid in identifying areas of contamination, an immunoassay that detects TCE has been developed for use as a cost effective field screening method to assess the level of TCE contamination in soil and water. The initial performance characteristics and validation studies of this test are presented. A correlation study using both soil and water samples compared the turn-around-time, cost and sample results of the immunoassay to EPA SW-846 GCMS Method 82401. The data demonstrated the immunoassay method correlated with method 8240, produced results within twenty-five (25) minutes and yielded an average analytical cost savings of roughly 75%.
