This manual is the user`s guide for the DIRECT version 4.0 program developed as part of EPRI project RP3103-03. The objective of the project was to develop analytical methods for screening and ranking contingencies for on-line Dynamic Security Assessment (DSA) using the Transient Energy Function (TEF) method. The program developed in this project made significant improvements to TEF algorithm such as the introduction of sparse matrix techniques, faster solutions for the unstable equilibrium point and variable step integration. This manual contains six chapters grouped into two main parts. Chapters 1-3 provide the functional description of the program, software structure, modelling features and options. Chapters 4-6 deal with data input, output and user interface to the program.
