Nondestructive Evaluation in Steel Structures Using Ultrasonic Guided Waves
- 300 Main St., Columbia SC 29208 (United States)
Material degradation and damage during extended service is an important concern for long-term nuclear power plant operation. Interim storage of spent nuclear fuel in dry storage systems (DSS) has gained additional importance and urgency for resolving waste-management-related technical issues. DOE has established research and development objectives to create technologies and solutions that can improve the reliability, sustain the safety while extending the life of nuclear facilities. To achieve this objective, nondestructive evaluation and monitoring of structural material conditions is highly desired to be integrated into the fuel cycle to quantify the 'state of health' and more importantly, to guarantee the safe operation of existing facilities during their predicted life span. Ultrasonics based NDE approach relies on elastic waves to achieve broad coverage across a range of material types and failure modes. Within the ultrasonic waves family, the guided ultrasonic waves (GUW) that propagate through the solid waveguides while interacting with the waveguide surface(s) are widely used due to their sensitivity to degradation through the thickness as well as their capability to provide area-wise inspection compared to the traditional point-wise inspection by pressure waves. To address the need for NDE of the steel canisters inside the DSS, an acoustic-ultrasonics (AU) NDE methodology has been under development utilizing the guided ultrasonic waves. Fundamental methods of using GUW in various modes to sensing and detection with various sensor technologies are present in this paper. (authors)
