The four main electrophoretic deposition (EPD) mechanisms are discussed and their shortcomings pointed out. The Hamaker constant for Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} in ethanol suspension is determined by modelling the relationship between particle interaction energy and suspension stability. The Derjagun-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) interaction energy curve for Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} particles in ethanol suspension is calculated and the minimum deposition voltage determined. Three probe dc measurements were conducted to explain discrepancies between the calculated and experimentally-observed voltage. A mechanism proposed is based on the DLVO theory and particle-lyosphere destortion/thinning. Kinetic equations for EPD are developed for constant current and constant voltage deposition using mass balance conditions and verified by experimental data.
