A water-based processing method for silicon nitride without polymeric additives was investigated. Silicon nitride particles were coated with boehmite via a sol-gel process to modify the long-range as well as short-range interactions between the silicon nitride particles. The coated suspensions gelled with time and the green-state deformation of coated and uncoated Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} bodies were studied. It is shown that a 1 inch diameter coated green-state Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} cylinder can be deformed with pressure to a 3 inches diameter disk without visible cracks after drying. Furthermore, it is shown that coated Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} green bodies can be extruded without much resistance. None of these properties were observed for the uncoated Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} green bodies. Boehmite coating is shown to be an excellent forming aid in the aqueous colloidal processing of silicon nitride.
