To improve whisker and powder dispersion of silicon nitride aqueous suspensions, a standard fiberglass surfactant, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) was added. APS coated aqueous suspensions were observed to have lower viscosities along with increased consolidation and dried green body densities compared to uncoated silicon nitride at pH values {le}8. APS adsorption behavior shows that silicon nitride was coated to saturation. Suspension pH measurements indicate that APS extracts one hydrogen ion for each APS molecule. Our results show that increased dispersion of silicon nitride can be achieved in acidic conditions.
