As a consequence of the use of catalytic converters, it is important to change over to the production and use of unleaded gasolines with lead content no higher than 0.01 gm/liter; such conversion involves significant capital investment in the refining industry. This changeover will be largely accomplished by the year 2000. VNII NP, in cooperation with interested organization, has developed a specification for unleaded automotive gasolines with improved ecological properties, the application of which will offer a means for reducing the amount of harmful discharges and the toxicity of the exhaust gas. This paper reports on the development of this specification.
