A competitive market for electric power raises the point that some utility investments might be over-valued, giving rise to the term stranded investment. Actual utility exposure to stranded investment may prove to be less sever than reported according to a recent study. The study concluded that only $73 billion may be stranded, based on a unit-by-unit basis for 8,829 generating plants. It was found that 45% of stranded investments are concentrated in Texas, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. The stranded investment was also found to be concentrated amoung 10 utilities, accounting for 50% of the 73 billion. How well U.S. electric utilities deal with potential stranded investments will likely control the pace and scope of change in the electric power industry.
