Design of the radwaste processing facility for the GE advanced boiling water reactor (GE ABWR): The first-of-a-kind-engineering project

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:229823
The Advanced Reactor Corporation (ARC) and the Department of Engineering (DOE), have entered into a cooperative agreement to support the implementation of Building Block 6 of the Nuclear Power Oversight Committee (NPOC) Strategic Plan for Nuclear Power Plants: First-Of-A-Kind-Engineering Project (FOAKE). The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is also involved in the development of this project. This project represents the industry`s effort to develop standard certified Advanced Light Water Reactors (ALWRs) for use by utilities. In order for the designs to be attractive to utilities the program involves the certification of the design by the USNRC thus minimizing the impact of licensing changes subsequent to the purchase of the plant. The design of the FOAKE plant emphasizes the need to develop a cost effective design that can be constructed and maintained at a cost that will be competitive with other forms of energy.
