Grant County PUD is testing a prototype downstream fish bypass system at Wanapum Dam that promises to be more effective than screens. If successful at diverting juvenile salmon away from turbine intakes, the concept could be applied at other hydro facilities facing fish passage challenges. The tested method---an attraction flow system---is an alternative to screens. In this system, entrances are strategically located above turbine intakes. This takes advantage of the natural tendency for juvenile salmonids to occupy the upper portion of the water column as they move downstream. Fish attracted to the channel by the water flow into the slots are passed to the tailrace, thus avoiding the turbines.
