Contamination Characteristics of Concrete by Radio-Cs in Off-site Concrete - 18284
- National Institute for Environmental Studies (Japan)
To obtain the penetration information of radio-cesium (r-Cs) in concrete, useful for the decommissioning or decontamination of contaminated concrete structures, Cs distributions are evaluated for real contaminated concrete near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The results showed that, for many road-related concrete samples, the contamination was limited to the surface. In other cases, the surface was contaminated and contamination at depths of a few millimeters was observed. The contamination on the surface was not water soluble; therefore, it was easy to reduce contamination using a water jet. Where cracks were observed in the concrete, r-Cs penetrated at least 10 cm deep. (authors)
