The reaction of equimolar amounts of ytterbocene (C{sub 5}Me{sub 4}H){sub 2}Yb(THF){sub 2} and iminopyridine 2,6-Pr{sup i}{sub 2}C{sub 6}H{sub 3}N=CH(C{sub 5}H{sub 4}N) accompanied by the one-electron oxidation of the ytterbium ion produced the unique lanthanide complex (C{sub 5}Me{sub 4}H){sub 2}Yb{sup III}[2,6-Pr{sup i}{sub 2}-C{sub 6}H{sub 3}NCH(C{sub 5}H{sub 4}N)]–• with the iminopyridine radical-anionic ligand. The structure of the complex in the crystalline state was established by X-ray diffraction and its magnetic properties were studied in the temperature range of 1.8—300 K.
