As our power grid evolves toward a more renewable future, energy storage is poised to take a larger role in meeting growing energy needs. Energy storage could help keep the power system reliable even through potential outages, periods of extreme weather, and when generation from variable renewable technologies like wind and solar is low. Given the different durations of these stressors, grid analysts at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) are working to better understand the role and benefits of long-duration energy storage - or storage technologies with 8-24 hours of storage capacity - in high variable renewable energy systems.
