Accelerators are finding increasing use in numerous fields such as medicine, industry accelerator-based nuclear energy programs and others. A recent survey reveals only 20 high-energy accelerators worldwide serve elementary-particle physics while thousands of accelerators are routinely used in hospitals and industry (packaging, food sterilization, etc.).
