For presentation at, and publication in the proceedings of, the National Radio Science Meeting, Boulder, CO, January 9-13, 2024.In this paper, we report on loss mechanisms contributing to the link budget for interrogation of Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) devices in metallic tubular structures. Impedance matching losses associated with a SAW device are minimized by design optimization and antenna coupling losses and resulting propagation losses are measured in metallic tubular structures enabling prediction of interrogation distances with various antenna configurations.
