Micro-macro modeling of casting solidification controlled by transient diffusion and undercooling
- Univ. of Mining and Metallurgy, Krakow (Poland)
The micro-macro model of solidification of casting with nodular grains is presented. On a macro-scale the boundary conditions of casting cooling and the temperature field in the casting are considered whereas on a microscale grain nucleation and grain growth are taken into consideration. The growth of spherical grains with two solid phase layers is controlled by transient diffusion of elements through the liquid and solid phases and by local undercooling at the two interfaces: solid/solid and solid/liquid. The model is used for solving nodular cast iron solidification processes such as the temperature field in the casting, grain density across casting, the dimension of each phase of the grain and the field of component concentration (carbon and silicon).
