Computational modeling of the macrosegregation that occurs in a casting during solidification requires that the local permeability of the mushy zone be specified. Therefore, an experimental investigation was conducted to determine the permeability of an Al-4.2 wt% Mg alloy cast into a U-shaped channel in a graphite crucible. A nitrogen pressure was applied to one end of the channel and the sample was heated at 0.6 K/s. The pressure and the resulting flow rate of the interdendritic melt were logged over time during remelting. The velocity of the interdendritic melt was determined from measurements of the displacement of a graphite float resting on the surface of the exuding liquid. A fraction solid was estimated from temperature measurements within the sample and the permeability of the mush zone was then calculated using Darcy`s law. The results are compared to recent experiments by others. Additional experiments promise to evaluate the influence of coarsening and the alloy composition on the permeability. Results are to be incorporated into a computer model of exudation during DC casting.
