At last, locate faults by recording traveling waves

The concept of locating transmission-line faults by recording the arrival times of travelling waves and calculating the distances according to the known speed of the waves has been known for years, but use of the technique has been hampered by the difficulty of providing a time base to compare the arrival times of the pulses at either end of the line. A traveling-wave system (TWS), developed by Hathaway Instruments Ltd, is described here. It operates continuously in three different modes, which enables it to locate phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground faults as well as broken conductors - including those lying on the ground where fault current is insufficient to operate protection relays. The system can be applied to circuits of any length, including those containing sections of both cables and overhead lines, lines with tapped or branched loads, series- compensated lines, and dc circuits. Accuracy is claimed to be between 300 to 1000 ft. 6 figs.
