Title: Synthesis, characterization and single crystal x-ray analysis of a complex of iron(II) bis(2,4-dimethylphenyl)dithiophosphate with 4-ethylpyridine

Abstract

Complex of iron(II) bis(2,4-dimethylphenyl)dithiophosphate with 4-ethylpyridine [((2,4- (CH{sub 3}){sub 2}C{sub 6}H{sub 3}O)2PS2)2Fe(NC{sub 5}H{sub 4}(C{sub 2}H{sub 5})-4){sub 2}] is synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic moment, IR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray analysis. Complex crystallizes in the monoclinic sp. gr. P2{sub 1}/n, Z = 2. Crystal structure consists of mononuclear units with Fe(II) ion chelated by four S atoms of the two diphenyldithiophosphate ligands in bidentate manner. N atoms from two 4-ethylpyridine ligands are axially coordinated to the Fe(II) atom leading to an octahedral geometry.

  • The reactions of aryl-, alkyl-, and alkoxy-substituted phosphorus hydrazides, RP(E)(NMeNH[sub 2])[sub 2] (R = Ph, E = S, I; R = OEt, E = S, 2; R = Ph, E = O, 3; R = Et, E = O, 4; R = Me, E = O, 5) with ferrocenecarboxaldehyde gave metallocene-functionalized phosphorus hydrazides in good yields (approximately 90-95%) as air-stable crystalline solids with the following chemical compositions: RP(E)(NMeNCHCp[prime]FeCp)[sub 2] (R = Ph, E = S, 6; R = OEt, E = S, 7; R = Ph, E = O, 8; R = Et, E = O, 9; R = Me,more » E = O, 10). These ferrocenyl phosphorus hydrazides 6-10 can be used as versatile synthons to produce new heterometallic organometallic compounds. The chemical constitutions of 6-10 and 11-15 were established by complete NMR ([sup 1]H and [sup 31]P) spectroscopic and C, H, and N analysis. As representative examples, X-ray structures of 7 and 12 have been determined. Crystal data for C[sub 2]H[sub 5]OP(S)(NMeNCHCp[prime]FeCp)[sub 2], 7: orthorhombic, space group P2[sub 1]2[sub 1]2[sub 1], a = 7.5556(11) [angstrom], b = 10.7652(12) [angstrom], c = 33.186(4) [angstrom], V = 2699.3(3) [angstrom][sup 3], Z = 4. The structure was solved by direct methods and was refined to R = 0.038. The structure of 12 comprises the neutral monomeric trimetallic complex C[sub 2]H[sub 5]OP(S)(NMeNCHCp[prime]FeCp)[sub 2][center dot]PdCl[sub 2] with the Pd(II) center in a square planar geometry. The structure of 12 is characterized by a six-membered ring with the Pd(II) bonded to two terminal hydrazine units of 7 in a cis disposition. Crystal data of 12: monoclinic, space group P2[sub 1]/c, a = 15.731(3) [angstrom], l = 18.695(3) [angstrom], c = 11.918(2) [angstrom], [beta] = 98.180(7)[degree], V = 3469.3(10) [angstrom][sup 3], Z = 4. The structure was solved by direct methods and was refined to R = 0.033. 21 refs., 2 figs., 6 tabs.« less
  • Carbon nanoribbons and single crystal iron filled multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been synthesized by simple pyrolysis technique. SEM investigation shows that the material consist mainly carbon nanoribbons and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), electron energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), transmission electron miscroscopy (TEM) and highresolution transmission electron miscroscopy (HRTEM) studies reveal carbon nanotubes are filled with {alpha}-Fe. Closer inspection of HRTEM images indicated that the bcc structure {alpha}-Fe nanowires are monocrystalline and Fe (1 1 0) plane is indeed perpendicular to the G (0 0 2) plane, whereas orientation of (0 0 2) latticemore » planes of carbon nanoribbon is perpendicular to the axis of growth. Magnetic properties studied by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) at 300 K and 10 K exhibited coercivity of 1037 Oe and 2023 Oe. The large coercitivity is strongly attributed to the small size monocrystalline single phase {alpha}-Fe, single domain nature of the encapsulated Fe crystal, magnetocrystalline shape anisotropy and ferromagnetic behaviour of localized states at the edges of the carbon nanoribbons.« less
  • Single crystals of iron(II) pyroborate, Fe{sub 2}B{sub 2}O{sub 5}, were prepared at 1000-1050 deg. C under an argon atmosphere. The crystals were transparent, yellowish in color and needle-like or columnar. The crystal structure of Fe{sub 2}B{sub 2}O{sub 5} was analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Refined triclinic unit cell parameters were a=3.2388(2), b=6.1684(5), c=9.3866(8) A, alpha=104.613(3){sup o}, beta=90.799(2){sup o} and gamma=91.731(2){sup o}. The final reliability factors of refinement were R1=0.020 and wR2=0.059 [I > 2sigma(I)]. Transmittance over 50% in the visible light region from 500 to 750 nm was observed for a single crystal of Fe{sub 2}B{sub 2}O{sub 5} with amore » thickness of about 0.3 mm. The light absorption edge estimated from a diffuse reflectance spectrum was at around 350 nm (3.6 eV). Magnetic susceptibility was measured for single crystals at 4-300 K. Fe{sub 2}B{sub 2}O{sub 5} showed antiferromagnetic behavior below the Neel temperature, T{sub N}{approx}70 K, and the Weiss temperature was T{sub W}=36 K. The effective magnetic moment of Fe was 5.3mu{sub B}. - Graphical abstract: View of the crystal structure of Fe{sub 2}B{sub 2}O{sub 5} using FeO{sub 6} octahedra. Fe{sub 2}B{sub 2}O{sub 5} has a quasi-one-dimensional structure, consisting of an [Fe{sub 4}O{sub 18}] unit parallel to the a-axis.« less

  • Carbonate is a strong complexing ligand for f-element and is expected to play an important role in the environmental fate of lanthanides and actinides. The authors report the crystallographic characterization of the first mononuclear lanthanide(III) carbonate. By employing the guanidinium cation, pink crystals of [C(NH{sub 2}){sub 3}]{sub 5}[Nd(CO{sub 3}){sub 4}(H{sub 2}O)]{center_dot}2H{sub 2}O were deposited in a matrix of colorless guanidinium carbonate crystals after slow evaporation of millimolar Nd(III) in a saturated [C(NH{sub 2}){sub 3}](CO{sub 3}) solution. The same compound was also obtained from a reaction of Nd(III) with guanidinium carbonate in aqueous solution at pH 10. A full single-crystal X-raymore » structure determination was carried out on one of these crystals.« less
