Title: Study the effect of chemical reaction and variable viscosity on free convection MHD radiating flow over an inclined plate bounded by porous medium

Abstract

An analysis is performed to study the free convection heat and mass transfer flow of an electrically conducting incompressible viscous fluid about a semi-infinite inclined porous plate under the action of radiation, chemical reaction in presence of magnetic field with variable viscosity. The dimensionless governing equations are steady, two-dimensional coupled and non-linear ordinary differential equation. Nachtsgeim-Swigert shooting iteration technique along with Runge-Kutta integration scheme is used to solve the non-dimensional governing equations. The effects of magnetic parameter, viscosity parameter and chemical reaction parameter on velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are discussed numerically and shown graphically. Therefore, the results of velocity profile decreases for increasing values of magnetic parameter and viscosity parameter but there is no effect for reaction parameter. The temperature profile decreases in presence of magnetic parameter, viscosity parameter and Prandtl number but increases for radiation parameter. Also, concentration profile decreases for the increasing values of magnetic parameter, viscosity parameter and reaction parameter. All numerical calculations are done with respect to salt water and fixed angle of inclination of the plate.

  • This paper develops an analytical solution for the problem of forced convection of a variable viscosity fluid over an impermeable flat plate submersed in a saturated porous medium. The conservation equations are coupled by the viscosity which is a function of temperature. The problem is solved by using the boundary layer approximation. The viscosity is taken as an inverse function of temperature. For water and crude oil, this function is in excellent agreement with experimental data. The results show that the variation of viscosity has significant influence on heat transfer. Thus, they are applicable to both geothermal and petroleum flows.
  • The role of temperature dependent viscosity is studied in the flow and vortex instability of a heated horizontal free convection boundary layer flow. Numerical results for the Nusselt, shear stress, critical Grashof, and wave numbers are presented for Prandtl numbers Pr[sub [infinity]] = 0.7, 7, 50, 100 and 500. It is shown that, for liquid heating, variable viscosity effect enhances the heat transfer rate and destabilizes the flow, while for gas heating, the opposite trend is true.
  • Effect of transpiration velocity on the heat and mass transfer characteristics of mixed convection about a permeable vertical plate embedded in a saturated porous medium under the coupled effects of thermal and mass diffusion is numerically analyzed. The plate is maintained at a uniform temperature and species concentration with constant transpiration velocity. The transformed governing equations are solved by Keller box method. Numerical results for the local Nusselt number and local Sherwood number are presented. In general, it has been found for thermally assisted flow that the local surface heat and mass transfer rates increase owing to suction of fluid.more » This trend reversed for blowing of fluid. It is apparent that the Lewis number has a pronounced effect on the local Sherwood number than it does on the local Nusselt number. Increasing the Lewis number decreases (increases) the local heat (mass) transfer rate.« less
  • The problem of free convection flow of a non-Newtonian power law fluid along an isothermal vertical flat plate embedded in the porous medium is considered in the present study. The physical coordinate system is shown schematically in Fig 1. In the present study, it is assumed that the modified Darcy law and the boundary layer approximation are applicable. This implies that the present solutions are valid at a high Rayleigh number. With these simplifications, the governing partial nonlinear differential equations can be transformed into a set of coupled ordinary differential equations which can be solved by the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method.more » Algebraic equations for heat transfer rate and boundary layer thickness as a function of the prescribed wall temperature and physical properties of liquid-porous medium are obtained. The similarity solutions can be applied to problems in geophysics and engineering. The primary purpose of the present study is to predict the characteristics of steady natural convection heat transfer using the model of the flow of a non-Newtonian power law fluid in a porous medium given by Dharmadhikari and Kale (1985). Secondly, the effects of the new power law index n on heat transfer are investigated.« less
  • The heat-transfer characteristics for free convection associated with isothermal vertical cylinder with surface mass transfer (blowing or suction) embedded in a saturated porous medium are analyzed. The nonsimilar equations are solved by using a suitable variable transformation and employing an implicit finite difference method. The numerical results for Nusselt number are expressed as functions of parameters which represent the effects of the cylinder curvature and the surface mass transfer. It is found that the local Nusselt numbers for a vertical cylinder are less sensitive to the surface mass transfer than those for a vertical plate. Blowing of mass decreases themore » heat transfer coefficient but the suction of mass increases the heat transfer coefficient.« less
