For the past five years, the ASQC Energy and Environmental Quality Division (EEQD) has led the effort to produce the first American National Standard for quality management practices for the collection and evaluation of environmental data and the design, construction, and operation of environmental technologies. The standard, entitled, ANSI/ASQC E4-1994, Specifications and Guidelines for Quality Systems for Environmental Data Collection and Environmental Technology Programs, defines the minimum quality management specifications for quality systems to support environmental activities, such as remediation, that involve environmental data collection and use, and the use of environmental technology. The application of the standard to a waste remediation activity is discussed to illustrate the usefulness of this new standard.
