Microstructures of slowly cooled ingots and melt spun Ti-47Al-3V ribbons have been investigated. In the slowly cooled ingot, {beta} was the high temperature primary phase in equilibrium with the melt during solidification and at room temperature the microstructure consisted of lamellar {alpha}{sub 2} + {gamma} structure and interdendritic {gamma} segregate. Rapid solidification changed the phase transformation sequence in the alloy dramatically, leading to complete {gamma} phase formation at the wheel side of the ribbons. These {gamma} grains generally contained plenty of stacking faults and thermal APBs. The metastable phase transformation sequence in the melt spun ribbons is consistent with L{r_arrow}L+{alpha}{r_arrow}{alpha}, followed by an {alpha}{r_arrow}{gamma}{sub m} massive transformation. The thermal APBs in the {gamma} grains are attributed to a disorder/order transition in the {gamma} phase.
