Gamma TiAl can be used to reduce the weight of aircraft engines. Substitution for both nickel and titanium alloys impossible on the basis of creep strength, stiffness and/or ignition resistance. A ``risk-phased`` approach is generally being used to gain engine experience and develop design methods. In choosing among manufacturing processes, the shape-making capability of the casting process has overwhelmed the potentially better properties from wrought processing. A major purpose of the testing has been to determine if the fracture behavior of gamma is acceptable. In short, the experience gained thus far indicates that ductility is most needed in the shop and that crack growth can be life-limiting (for both monotonic and fatigue loading). Numerous engine programs are now considering introduction of a wide variety of gamma parts.
