DEVELOPMENT OF DIELECTRIC DISK ACCELERATORS FOR THE ARGONNE 500-MEV, SHORT-PULSE, TWO-BEAM WAKEFIELD ACCELERATOR DEMONSTRATOR
In collaboration with the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator (AWA) group at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), Euclid Beamlabs has completed Phase I and II of the project, under contract DE-SC0019864, titled “Development of Dielectric Disk Accelerators for the Argonne 500-MeV, Short Pulse, Two-Beam Wakefield Accelerator Demonstrator”. This SBIR project aimed to demonstrate an ultrahigh gradient Dielectric Disk-loaded Accelerator (DDA). In Phase I, the full development cycle of the first prototype DDA structure (Prototype I) from design to high-power RF tests was completed within 9 months. Prototype I was tested up to an accelerating gradient of 47 MV/m from 80 MW of input power but suffered severe RF breakdowns. In Phase II, four DDA structures (Prototypes II-V) with different engineering approaches were designed, built and tested. Prototype II failed in the fabrication process, but Prototype III was successfully tested to a record high gradient (102 MV/m) and RF power (320 MW) without RF breakdown nor multipactor. A new low temperature braze RF and engineering design was completed for Prototype IV. Prototype V, a multicell clamped structure, was designed and fabricated. The high power test at the AWA had to be halted due to arcing in the electron gun used to produce the drive beam responsible for producing the high power short pulse input to the DDA at high drive beam charge. 80MV/m of gradient (222MW rf input) was reached before suspension of the test. To that point, no evidence of multipactor or breakdown in the structure was observed. In conclusion, the suite of dielectric disk loaded accelerator prototypes tested during this project indicates that this is a viable technology for building a short pulse, two-beam wakefield accelerator.
