Determination of the rate constant for the reaction of americium ions with atomic hydrogen in aqueous solutions by means of pulse radiolysis

For the rate constant for several series of reactions involving actinides (An) a dependence of the reaction rate constant on the difference in the oxidation-reduction potentials of the reactants {Delta}E{sup 0} is revealed, owing to the similarity of the structural and electronic properties of these elements in identical oxidation states. It was found that for the reactions of UO{sub 2}{sup 2+}, NpO{sub 2}{sup 2}, and PuO{sub 2}{sup 2+} with atomic hydrogen, the logarithm of the reaction rate constant is a linear function of {Delta}E{sup 0} for the AnO{sub 2} {sup 2+}/AnO{sub 2}{sup +} pair. Extrapolation of the function to the {Delta}E{sup 0} for the AmO{sub 2}{sup 2+}/Am{sub 0}{sup +} pair indicates that the reaction H+AmO{sub 2}{sup 2+}{r_arrow}H{sup +}+AmO{sub 2}{sup +} should have a rate constant {approximately}1{center_dot}10{sup 9} liter/mole{center_dot}sec. In order to verify this, the authors measured k{sup 1} using pulsed radiolysis and spectrophotometric detection of the short-lived species. For sake of comparison, the rate constant for the reaction H+AmO{sub 2}{sup +}{r_arrow}H{sup +}+Am(H{sub 2}O){sub n}{sup 4+} was also measured. 8 refs., 1 fig.
