Graft polymerization of acrylic acid to polyethylene films from 15-70% toluene solutions initiated by {sup 60}Co {gamma}-rays was investigated for fabrication of ion-exchange membranes with good deformation-strength properties. It was found that without hydroquinone, the yield of graft polyacrylic acid was a weak function of the absorbed dose, and homopolymerization of the monomer took place intensely. The degree of conversion of acrylic acid decreased, and the degree of grafting increased in the presence of hydroquinone. The equilibrium distribution of the graft polyacrylic acid over the cross section of the films caused their elasticity. 15 refs., 1 fig., 4 tabs.
