I review the early experimental searches for double pomeron exchange, the first observations at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) and further studies at the SPS and Tevatron (fixed target). I only have space for a superficial coverage of some highlights, and will not cover later colliders with √(s)>100 GeV.
