Because of certain physical motivations, one of us (R.M.S.) introduced in 1980 the notion of isofields as the infinite family of axiom-preserving isotopies of fields of characteristic zeros, with the isotopy referred to the multiplication, and introduced in 1985 a new conjugation characterizing the so-called isoduals isofields. In this paper we introduce the most general possible formulation of isofields and their isoduals, including the isotopies of the elements, for the case of arbitrary isocharacteristic p. Ten classes of most significant isofields, are then identified depending on the most salient characteristics of their structure. The relevance of the theory is illustrated by showing that all fields of characteristic zero (the fields of real numbers, complex numbers and quaternions), as well as all their infinitely possible isotopes and isodual isotopes can be unified into one single abstract notion, the isofield of real numbers. 30 refs.
