Polymer Recycling Opportunities and Challenges [Slides]
- National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Golden, CO (United States)
Given the multitude of polymer types and emerging recycling technologies, it can be challenging to determine how to reach a circular, sustainable, and technically-viable economy for plastics. Here, we discuss some of the key opportunities (reducing environmental impacts and costs) and challenges (poor material quality and contamination issues) facing plastic recycling. We also show how leveraging multiple recycling options could enable these opportunities and challenges to work in synergy.
