Synthesis and magnetic properties of layered MnPS{sub x}Se{sub 3-x} (0 < x < 3) and corresponding intercalation compounds of 2,2'-bipyridine

Graphical abstract: A series of new layered MnPS{sub x}Se{sub 3-x} (0 < x < 3) compounds and the corresponding intercalation compounds of 2,2'-bipyridine were designed and synthesized and the structure was determined by XRD, TF-IR and elemental analysis. It was found that MnPS{sub x}Se{sub 3-x} exhibited antiferromagnetism similar to MnPS{sub 3} or MnPSe{sub 3}, but the intercalation of 2,2'-bipyridine can dramatically change the properties of MnPS{sub x}Se{sub 3-x} slab. Research highlights: {yields} A series of new MnPS{sub x}Se{sub 3-x} are designed and synthesized for the first time and their layered structure has been determined. {yields} The intercalation chemistry has been initially studied via the intercalation of 2,2'-bipyridine with MnPS{sub x}Se{sub 3-x}. {yields} The magnetic properties of the series MnPS{sub x}Se{sub 3-x} and the corresponding intercalation compounds of 2,2'-bipydine have been studied. And the relationship between the structure and the magnetic propertied has been primarily explored. -- Abstract: In this work, we synthesize a series of new MnPS{sub x}Se{sub 3-x} (0 < x < 3) compounds by high temperature solid-state reaction and also obtain the corresponding intercalation compounds (Mn{sub 1-y}PS{sub x}Se{sub 3-x}(bipy){sub 4y}, x = 1.2, 1.8 and 2.4) via the intercalation of 2,2'-bipyridine with MnPS{sub x}Se{sub 3-x}. XRD results confirm that MnPS{sub x}Se{sub 3-x} compounds show the layered structure and can be regarded as the solid solution of MnPS{sub 3} and MnPSe{sub 3}. Magnetic measurements indicate that MnPS{sub x}Se{sub 3-x} compounds exhibit paramagnetism with negative Weiss constant in the paramagnetic temperature region, and an antiferromagnetic phase transition occurs at the Neel temperature. It is found that the magnetic properties of MnPS{sub x}Se{sub 3-x} slab are dramatically changed after the intercalation of 2,2'-bipyridine, which is close related to the relative ratio of S and Se atom as well as the intralayered Mn{sup 2+} vacancies of MnPS{sub x}Se{sub 3-x} slab.
