The structures of Schiff bases prepared by the condensation of 2-tosylaminobenzaldehyde with 2-alkylamino-5-nitroanilines were studied by X-ray diffraction. The intramolecular N-H Horizontal-Ellipsis N hydrogen bonds result in the closure of six-membered hydrogen-bonded rings, which are either planar or nonplanar depending on the substituent. According to the results of quantum-chemical calculations, the distortion of the hydrogen-bonded ring is associated with the character of molecular packing in the crystal.
