A model for predicting characterization requirements and future analytical laboratory loads for alpha-contaminated waste

Regulatory compliance and effective management of TRU waste in the United States requires a knowledge of the constituents present. With limited resources, the United States Department of Energy (DOE) needs a cost-effective characterization program. In addition, the DOE needs a method for predicting the present and future analytical requirements for waste characterization so that it can provide facilities to meet the need. Thus, a model that can be used to predict the present and future waste characterization needs, using current knowledge of the TRU inventory, has been developed.
