On-line reference library aids gas-turbine users

This article describes a software application program which has been developed that helps the operator, technician, and others troubleshoot gas-turbine problems more effectively than traditional means. Paired with the personal computer, the program permits information, traditionally created and stored on hard copy, to be stored electronically--in effect, it is an on-line reference library. The electronic information can be retrieved, manipulated, and presented to the user based on a set of established criteria. By consolidating documents--electrical schematics, drawings, device specifications, operator logs, calibration data, etc.--the plant staff becomes privy to both real-time and historical information regarding gas-turbine operation. With ready access to such information, the staff is able to troubleshoot quickly and efficiently. The library runs in conjunction with a Windows-based turbine-operating interface (TOI) that graphically represents the on-base devices necessary for operational control. Although operators may not be familiar with the exact purpose of each device represented, they can associate them with the process represented by the particular control screen on which it is shown. For example, an operator may recognize the graphical representation of an auxiliary motor as an important device within the lubrication system because it is shown on the corresponding interface screen, but may have neither knowledge regarding what master control circuit it is wired to, nor where it is located. The on-line reference library is accessed through these graphical representations by triggering a mouse, touch screen, or other input device, or automatically launched from specific alarms generated by the turbine controller. The operator need not be skilled in a particular set of commands or phrases.
