The Human Factors Engineering (HFE) Design Team within a concurrent engineering environment has a very difficult task in integrating HFE in the design processes of Systems, Structures and Components (SSC). In this ever-changing environment, where layouts, operator and maintenance staff tasks and roles change frequently, it is imperative to have access to tools with which information can be gathered and designs evaluated swiftly and precisely. This paper describes a process that is linked to a number of tools which the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) HFE Design Team uses to gather functional, task, layout, operational and maintenance information. The process is described step by step, with inputs to, outputs from and the tools used to capture, evaluate and control information within the HFE design. (authors)
