The Mt. Hope Waterpower Project is a 2000 MW pumped storage hydroelectric development located in northern New Jersey which is scheduled to commence construction in 1996. The Mt. Hope Waterpower Project is the third-largest hydro project that has been approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and it will be the second-largest pumped storage plant in the world when operation commences in 2002. This paper discusses the design development of the Mt. Hope Project to ensure the final Project is both in harmony with the environment and economical to develop. The Mt. Hope Project is being developed in the immediate vicinity of a major load center in a suburban New Jersey setting. The opportunity is the placement of a major generating facility near a load center. The challenge is to do this unobtrusively and in harmony with the surroundings of a heavily populated and environmentally sensitive suburban region. This must be done while still ensuring that the Project economics are favorable to the utilities when compared with other sources of generation.
