Many papers have been written on the effects of flow on the corrosion behavior of oil field steels; however, little has been written about the effects of various corrosion inhibitor packages on flow accelerated corrosion. Water soluble as well as oil soluble inhibitors have been screened using the rotating cylinder electrode (RCE) technique. The RCE results presented here point out the importance of how inhibitors are applied in laboratory tests as well as in field applications. Compounds which gave good results in the RCE test were introduced in the flow loop test which subjected the inhibitors to much higher flow rates and wall shear stresses. Compounds selected using the test protocols described in this paper have been successfully field tested and gone on to successful field application.
