This is the first of a two-part series on geostatistical techniques. These numerical techniques allow reservoir engineers and geoscientists to create geologically-realistic heterogeneous numerical and reservoir models for the determination of volumetrics, well placement and recovery factors. This paper reviews the advantages of 3-D numerical geologic models and use of these to calculate porosity and permeability. Methods for checking the accuracy and performance of the models are described.
