Operating new 55-gallon drum shufflers at Los Alamos

Two passive-active shufflers designed to assay 55-gallon drums of waste for U-235 and plutonium have recently begun operation at Los Alamos National Laboratory. These shufflers were designed at LANL and were fabricated by Canberra Industries. They assay for plutonium by passive neutron-coincidence counting and for U-235 by inducing fissions and counting delayed neutrons. Design and operation of these shufflers is described in this paper.
