Title: Efficient wide-aperture neodymium glass rod amplifiers

Abstract

Amplifiers based on neodymium phosphate glass rods 60 - 100 mm in diameter are experimentally studied. The amplifiers are pumped by INP-16/250 tubular flash lamps placed in a universal pump cavity with a two-section mirror reflector. A compact high-voltage capacitive energy storage with a preionisation circuit was developed to supply the lamps. (lasers)

  • An experimental investigation was made of the parameters of 60-mm-diameter amplifiers pumped in various enclosures. A study was made of the influence of flashlamps, nature of the enclosure, and neodymium concentration on the gain. The maximum output energies of the amplifiers were calculated for circular and linear polarizations, and these were compared with the experimental values. Estimates were obtained of the parameters of rod amplifiers with apertures right up to 150 mm.
  • The depolarisation dynamics in a neodymium glass rod laser amplifier is experimentally studied. A method for determining the temperature distribution and the thermally induced phase distortions from the known transverse depolarisation degree distribution is proposed. The experimental results obtained by this method perfectly coincide with the theoretical results even at a strong radial inhomogeneity of the heat release. (active media)
  • The results are reported of an investigation of the extraction of the energy stored in an inhomogeneously broadened gain profile of neodymium glasses by amplification of laser pulses. It is reported that the highest energy can be extracted in the long-wavelength wing of a luminescence line of a phosphate glass. A comparison is made of the experimental results with the spectroscopic data on the Stark structure of a laser transition in neodymium glasses, and with the data on narrow-band excitation of the luminescence spectra of inhomogeneously broadened systems.
  • A program is developed to calculate the pumping of a multiflashlamp disk amplifier. This can be used to calculate the time dependence and spatial distribution of the population inversion in the active elements of laser amplifier systems. The program takes into account the real geometry of the system, spectral-luminescence properties of the laser glass, spectral-temporal characteristics of the pump source, and amplified spontaneous emission. Results of some numerical experiments are presented. The calculated results are compared with the experimental data.
  • A program for the calculation of the energy characteristics of amplifiers, based on the Monte Carlo method, was used to calculate the characteristics of a disk amplifying stage with a transverse pump system and an aperture of 15 cm. A study is made of the influence of various physical factors on the efficiency of an amplifier and, in particular, the role of the 0.35 ..mu.. absorption band of neodymium was identified. The results of the calculations are compared with the available experimental data. It is shown that when the laser pulse duration is 1 nsec, the efficiency of a multistagemore » disk laser can reach approx.0.15% and the efficiency of the final stage can be approx.0.3%.« less
