Application of air sparging and SVE for biotreatment of soils at Delaware Air National Guard, Delaware
- Earth Tech, Alexandria, VA (United States)
Site characterization at a defense facility in Delaware identified chlorinated hydrocarbons and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) contamination in soils and groundwater. The subsurface geology at the site has complicated the migration, hence remediation of the contaminant. A multi-phase treatment approach was used to treat contaminated soils and groundwater under varying lithologic conditions. A multi-phase treatment approach was adopted using conventional soil vapor extraction (SVE) and air sparging. SVE and air sparging were applied in different sequential combinations; SVE alone, SVE with air sparging, and air sparging alone. Air sparging was used as primary remedial technology. SVE was applied to enhance the effectiveness of air sparging. Potential for biotreatment of soils was evaluated by conducting a biovent test in the vadose zone.
