Since it is the dynamic microstructure formed by the wear processes which determines the wear resistance of a material, the examination of the near surface microstructure has been the basis of numerous studies. However, an understanding of the microstructural evolution is far from complete. In this letter the authors report on the frictional heating induced coarsening behavior of {theta} precipitates in an Al-4wt% Cu alloy. This alloy was employed since the precipitation sequence, the equilibrium phase stability and coarsening under static conditions have been extensively studied and it therefore represents a model system in which to compare the microstructural evolution at a worn surface.
