Interdiffusion in the high temperature b.c.c. {beta} Hf-Zr solid-solution
- I.N.S.A., Rennes (France). Lab. de Metallurgie
The properties of the group IVb metals (Ti, Zr, Hf) have been widely studied. These three metals show an allotropic martensitic type phase transformation. The high temperature b.c.c. phase is the {beta} phase and the low temperature h.c.p. one is the {alpha} phase. The binary systems between two of these elements show solid-solutions between the corresponding allotropic varieties. The diffusion of the interstitial elements oxygen and nitrogen as well as self-diffusion and heterodiffusion at infinite dilution of some elements in these materials have given rise to many works. The present work deals with the interdiffusion phenomenon in the {beta} area of the Hf-Zr alloys. The results confirm the diffusion mechanism proposed for these alloys and appreciably differ from a few results published earlier.
