In 1993, UIUC received a permit from the Illinois EPA that required tracking of all waste chemicals from the campus point of generation to the University`s storage facility to the point of final disposal. In addition, standard tracking labels were required that indicate hazards and handling methods. Using dBase IV, we developed a set of databases and a program (TrackIt) to accomplish these objectives. A master chemical database with information on over 7300 chemicals has been created and is constantly updated. Although some of the databases have been in use for several years, the tracking program was not fully implemented until February, 1995. Over 1600 waste containers are generated and tracked each month. The tracking program uses bar codes to facilitate tracking of each container. The tracking program has simplified record keeping, standardized waste management methods, and is expected to provide excellent information for waste minimization activities.
