We are synthesizing a series of main-chain nonlinear optical polymers based on benzazole derivatives with a range of conjugation lengths. These polymers should exhibit high Tg`s, good oxidative and thermal stability, and excellent mechanical strength: all of which are crucial to device oriented NLO materials. Model compounds for these polymers have been shown to possess high third-order NLO nonlinearities on the order of 10{sup -11} esu. Two routes to polymeric thin films are being utilized, namely (1) vapor phase deposition (VPD) on monomeric cyclic dimers, and (2) solution casting utilizing soluble precursors.
