Thermal, mechanical and morphological properties are reported for two polyamides that are functionalized with crosslinkable keto-benzocyclobutene (BCB) pendants. The crosslinking reaction of the BCB pendants begins at 220{degrees}C and maximizes at 280{degrees}C. The glass transition temperature of the pristine polyamides is higher than the crosslinking temperature of the BCB pendants and thus cannot be determined by a thermal method. Solution-cast thin films of the polyamides showed tensile properties comparable to most engineering plastics. The high molecular weight of the polyamides and the acid stability of the BCB pendants render the polymers suitable for rigid-rod molecular composite fabrications. Thin films coagulated from a composite solution of one of the polyamides and rigid-rod poly(p-phenylene benzobisthiazole) (PBZT) exhibited spherical domains of the polyamide on the order of 30 to 60 nm in size resting on a network structure of PBZT. Such a morphology did not change with the curing of the polyamide.
