Coke deposition on the hydrotreating catalyst

The deposition of coke onto catalysts during the conversion of vacuum gas oil (VGO) has been investigated in a trickle-bed reactor for 600-2200 h at 380-410{degrees}C and moderate hydrogen pressures (6.4 MPa). The coke has subsequently been characterized by means of high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM). At first the coke is not located at specific parts of the surface and it is observed that the coke looks like amorphous structures. After supercritical extraction by CO{sub 2}/ethanol, crystallized coke appeared on the naked Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} surface. This coke consists of distinct layered structures (d=3.39 {Angstrom}). The result suggests that catalytic affect exists in coke formation on the hydrotreating catalyst.
