Oil conversion processes such as fluid catalytic cracking have a major impact on the profitability of a refinery. Slight improvements in the process can be very valuable. FCC catalyst testing is a prerequisite to keep or enhance the profitability of the FCC process. Another incentive for the development of FCC catalyst is to meet the future challenges e.g. resid cracking or environmental aspects. One of the first steps in a research programme is to select a suitable testing reactor that will give highly reliable information. In the case of FCC, the most optimal choice for pilot plant testing will be discussed. A test reactor, called the Microriser, is presented which fulfills these demands. It consists of a folded riser reactor with conditions and reactor length adjustable in wide ranges. A comparison between the developed Microriser and standard MAT tests will be presented.
